SUNLIGHT THROUGH AN ICE CRYSTAL JOKULSARLON ICEBERG BEACH ICELAND

Sunlight through an Ice Crystal, Jokulsarlon Iceberg Beach, Iceland.
Jokulsarlon, in Icelandic pronunciation, means ‘ glacial river lagoon”. It is a large glacial lake in southeast Iceland, on the edge of Vatnajokull glacier and considered one of the natural wonders of Iceland.
The icebergs that calve from the glacier edge move towards the river mouth and eventually drift out from the glacial lagoon into the Atlantic Ocean, these are seen in two shades, milky white and bright blue, which depends on the air trapped within the ice and is an interplay of light and crystals.
Before reaching the sea, they are deposited on Jokulsarlon Iceberg Beach, a beach of black volcanic sand and appear like varying sizes of diamonds from waist height to football size glinting in the sun, for miles, as far as the eye can see.
In January, the days are short, with sunrise at 11am and sunset 4pm.
This particular afternoon in mid January at 2pm about two hours before sunset, the sun was low in the sky, with a temperature of 1C.
The angle of the light started to illuminate a snail shaped crystal on the beach bringing it to life.
As a wave receded from around the ice, the light reflected in the wet sand echoing the colour of the crystal and all resembled mother of pearl..
Within moments the angle of light changed and the moment was gone.
